Nevada ranks #6 in the U.S. for cumulative solar capacity (SEIA, 2025), largely because of its exceptional solar resource β Las Vegas receives 5.5-6.2 peak sun hours per day, among the highest in the nation. Yet Nevada's solar story is complicated by two rounds of net metering policy reversals that happened in 2015 and again in 2023. Understanding these policy shifts is essential to evaluating whether solar makes financial sense for your Nevada home in 2026.
Nevada's solar resource is among the best in the U.S. A 8 kW system in Las Vegas produces approximately 12,800 kWh/year β 25% more than the same system in New York or New Jersey. This higher production shortens payback period and increases total savings. The only U.S. locations with more peak sun are parts of Arizona and California's Imperial Valley.

NV Energy's residential electricity rates have increased by approximately 3.8% per year since 2018, according to Nevada Public Utilities Commission (PUC) filings. The average residential rate in 2026 is $0.142/kWh, up from $0.115/kWh in 2020. At this inflation rate, a solar system that eliminates a $160/month bill will see its effective savings grow from $1,920/year initially to $2,850/year by year 15.
Nevada originally had full-retail net metering (Nevada was the first state to exceed 1 GW of solar in 2016). But in December 2015, the PUC abruptly ended net metering for new customers and allowed NV Energy to charge higher rates to solar customers. This caused installations to collapse by 90%. After public outcry, Nevada restored net metering in 2017 via Assembly Bill 405 β but with graduated crediting rates (near-retail for small systems, lower for large ones). Then in 2023, NV Energy proposed a new "NEM 3.0" structure that would further reduce export compensation. As of early 2026, the outcome of this proposal is still pending PUC approval β which creates urgency for homeowners to install before potential changes.
All Nevada homeowners who purchase (not lease) a solar system are eligible for the federal tax credit, which covers 30% of total system cost. For an $18,000 installation, this reduces your federal tax liability by $5,400. The credit remains at 30% through 2032, then steps down to 26% (2033) and 22% (2034). File IRS Form 5695 with your tax return.
NV Energy previously offered a "Solar Incentive Program" that provided upfront rebates for residential solar. That program ended for new applicants in 2021. However, NV Energy still offers incentives for low-income customers through the "Solar for All" program (funded by the EPA Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund). As of 2026, eligible low-income customers in NV Energy territory may qualify for a free or heavily subsidized solar installation. Check NV Energy's website for current eligibility.

Nevada law (NRS 701B.120) exempts the added home value from a solar installation from property tax assessment. This means your property taxes will not increase because you added solar panels. This exemption applies to both purchased and leased systems (though leased systems aren't eligible for the federal tax credit). The exemption is permanent for systems installed before 2035.
Under the 2017 restored net metering rules (AB 405), new solar customers are credited for excess generation at graduated rates that vary by total system size as a percentage of the customer's load. For most residential systems under 10 kW, the export rate is approximately 75-85% of the retail rate. Systems 10-20 kW receive ~65-75%, and systems above 20 kW receive ~55-65%. While not full-retail 1:1 net metering, these rates still make solar financially attractive in Nevada β especially given the state's high sun hours.
β οΈ Important: NV Energy's NEM 3.0 proposal (filed in 2023) would significantly reduce these export rates. If approved by the PUC, new customers would receive only wholesale-rate compensation (~$0.04-0.06/kWh) for exports. This would extend payback periods by 3-5 years. The proposal is still under review as of mid-2026.

But the installer explained that the current rules (post-2017 restoration) are stable, and our payback calculation still works.
